2016 Volkswagen Golf R Priced at $36,470, Adds Six-Speed Manual Transmission


HERNDON, Virginia – The 2016 Volkswagen Golf R hot hatchback arrives at Volkswagen dealerships with a starting price of $36,470 and a new six-speed manual transmission for the base model.

Pricing includes an $820 destination charge.

The base 2016 Golf R with the manual transmission gets a long list of standard items including 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with performance summer tires, Bluetooth connectivity and a rearview camera. The Golf R is equipped with a 292-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

The 2016 Golf R with the six-speed automatic transmission is priced at $37,570, including shipping. It is $155 more expensive than the 2015 Golf R with the automatic transmission.

The top-of-the-line 2016 Golf R with Dynamic Chassis Control, a navigation system and automatic transmission starts at $39,815, including shipping.

Other changes for the new model year include upgraded infotainment systems with USB and VW Car-Net App-Connect.

An updated $1,295 Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, a blind-spot monitor with rear-traffic alert and park distance control.

Key Golf R rivals include the Ford Focus RS, Honda Civic Si and Subaru WRX STI.

Edmunds says: Driving enthusiasts will welcome the addition of the six-speed manual transmission, an important change for the popular Golf R.
