Proposed Volkswagen Diesel-Emissions Recall Plan Gets Extension From California Regulators

SACRAMENTO, California – The California Air Resources Board is extending a deadline to consider a proposed Volkswagen diesel-emissions recall plan until January 14.

The letter to Volkswagen was posted on the CARB Website on Friday.

The delay means that owners of nearly 500,000 Volkswagen vehicles with 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engines are still in a holding pattern when it comes to a fix for the cars. The vehicles are equipped with illegal software that lets them emit up to 40 times the legal level of pollutants, according to the EPA.

The vehicles include the 2009-’15 Volkswagen Jetta TDI; 2009-’14 Jetta SportWagen TDI; 2010-’15 Golf TDI; 2015 Golf SportWagen TDI; 2012-’15 Beetle TDI and Beetle Convertible TDI and the 2012-’15 Passat TDI.

California regulators and the EPA are waiting for a separate repair plan from Volkswagen for 85,000 vehicles with 3.0-liter engines.

Volkswagen told Edmunds that it is working to develop an approved remedy as quickly as possible.

Last week, the automaker hired Kenneth R. Feinberg, a compensation expert, to come up with an independent pro gram that may include cash compensation for affected consumers.
