Hyundai Ioniq To Feature Class-Leading Aerodynamics: 2016 New York Auto Show

SEOUL, South Korea – New teaser images of the Hyundai Ioniq – an all-new vehicle set to compete against the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius – were released on Wednesday by the Korean automaker. U.S. car shoppers will get their first look at the Ioniq at the 2016 New York Auto Show.

The Ioniq will feature three electrified drivetrain options, as Hyundai boosts its green-car strategy. The vehicle will be offered as an electric car, a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid.

The new images show a sedan with a coupelike look and sleek lines. The color choice on the rendering is “formulated to be evocative of fog about to lift,” the automaker said.

A single image of the interior highlights what Hyundai calls a “clutter-free theme.”

Hyundai said the Ioniq “will combine head-turning good looks with class-leading aerodynamic performance.”

The car’s name blends the words “ion” and “unique.” An ion is an electrically charged atom, “linking to the car’s clever combination of electrified powertrains,” Hyundai said.

The Ioniq rides on a new platform. Pricing and U.S. launch timing were not disclosed.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers get a better look at the Hyundai Ioniq, which is a little bit late to the party, considering that the fourth-generation Toyota Prius and the redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Volt are already available at Toyota and Chevrolet dealerships.
