Crossovers Credited With Changing Car Shoppers' Buying Habits

SCHAUMBURG, Illinois – Crossover vehicles, including the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, are responsible for a seismic shift in the auto industry, according to a new report released on Monday.

Crossover-utility vehicles account for nearly 24 percent of the market in 2015, up more than 100 percent from 2006, said Experian Automotive, an information and research firm.

“While there is now a near-identical volume of vehicles registered, consumer buying habits have changed over the past nine years,” the report said.

Other popular entries in the crossover segment include the Buick Encore, Chevrolet Equinox, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue and Subaru Forester.

Experian Automotive said crossovers provide consumers with “a nice balance between utilitarian need and fuel economy.”

“Midrange cars” came in 2nd behind crossovers in the report, followed by pickup trucks.

Alternative-power vehicles were at the bottom of the list, making up 1.7 percent of market share in 2015.

Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Nissan and Toyota held the top five spots in market share in 2015, the report said. They made up 54 percent of the 17 million new-vehicle registrations.

Popular models from those manufacturers include the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickups, Toyota Camry midsize sedan and Toyota Corolla compact car, the report said.
