WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey – The all-new 2016 BMW M2 high-performance coupe and the 2016 BMW X4 M40i compact crossover are slated for world debuts on January 11 at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, BMW confirmed on Friday.
As the long-awaited awaited replacement for the well-loved but short-lived BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the M2 promises a similar amount of big-time fun in a smaller package than BMW’s other M Division cars. It will feature a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that delivers 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission is optional.
The M2 will arrive at BMW’s U.S. dealerships in the spring, with pricing announced closer to the car’s on-sale date. It will compete with such high-performance offerings as the Audi TTS, Mercedes-AMG CLA45 and Porsche Cayman.
The 2016 BMW X4 M40i is a new, range-topping performance variant of the X4 compact crossover that was introduced for 2015. At its heart is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine good for 355 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque that BMW says will bring the X4 M40i from zero to 60 mph in a rapid 4.7 seconds. The engine also makes its world debut in Detroit.
Like other M Sport variants such as the BMW M235i, the X4 M40i features a variety of other enhancements that slot it somewhere in between a regular BMW and one from the company’s M Division. These include suspension upgrades, retuned steering and a recalibrated xDrive all-wheel-drive system, along with more aggressive styling.
The X4 M40i will go on sale in February with pricing to be announced closer to the on-sale date.
Key competitors include the Audi SQ5 and Porsche Macan.
Edmunds says: Expect the BMW M2 to be one of the most hotly anticipated new cars of 2016 among car enthusiasts, while the X4 M40i represents yet another crossover flavor from BMW.
