ROCKLEIGH, New Jersey – The all-new 2016 Volvo XC90 SUV is now available with the Apple CarPlay smartphone integration system.
That makes the XC90 the first Volvo model in the U.S. with this functionality, soon to be followed by the all-new flagship S90 sedan, which will debut in January at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.
Both a convenience and a safety feature, CarPlay seamlessly integrates mobile devices with vehicle systems, like Volvo’s Sensus Connect, placing smartphone apps and other features on the dashboard display so drivers don’t need to take their eyes off the road to control infotainment and other functions.
“The Apple CarPlay experience enhances the award-winning user interface already available on the XC90 and just announced S90 sedan,” said Lex Kerssemakers, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, in a statement. “The Sensus Connect touchscreen gives us flexibility to update software and add features to cars after they have been delivered to customers. This is an important part of our commitment to long-term customer satisfaction.”
Volvo notes that XC90 owners who took delivery of their vehicles before November 23, 2015, can schedule an appointment at their local Volvo dealer to receive a complimentary CarPlay software update, while buyers who received their vehicles after that date may purchase CarPlay for $300.
In addition to CarPlay, the available software update also includes Pandora and Yelp apps, as well as HERE navigation maps and INRIX real-time traffic information.
Edmunds says: CarPlay’s addition to the 2016 XC90 will be appreciated by many shoppers interested in Volvo’s top-of-the-line SUV.
