2014-’15 Mini Cooper Recalled for Airbag Concern

WASHINGTON – BMW of North America is recalling 38 2014-’15 Mini Cooper and Cooper S hardtop two-door coupes because an incorrectly programmed seat-mat sensor may cause inappropriate airbag activation or deactivation, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Also included in the recall are 2015 Mini Cooper and Cooper S hardtop four-door sedans.

The problem affects front passenger seat cushions that were replaced during a previous service appointment.

“Inappropriate airbag activation/deactivation can increase the risk of occupant injury in the event of a vehicle crash,” said NHTSA in its recall summary.

There are no accidents or injuries linked to the recall, the company told federal safety regulators.

If the “Passenger Airbag Off” lamp is illuminated when an adult is seated in the front passenger seat, passengers are advised to sit in the rear seat until the repair can be made.

Other models in which the front passenger seat cushion was replaced during a service appointment have a sensor that was correctly programmed, BMW said.

Mini dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion. The recall is expected to begin on December 28. Owners can contact Mini customer service at 1-866-825-1525.
