Volkswagen and Audi Issue Stop-Sale Orders on 2013-'16 Diesel Vehicles

HERNDON, Virginia – Volkswagen Group of America and Audi of America on Wednesday told Edmunds they will stop the sale of certain diesel vehicles equipped with 3.0-liter six-cylinder engines in the U.S. and Canada in the wake of the growing diesel-emissions scandal.

The stop-sale went into effect today and will continue indefinitely.

“This is a proactive step until we can get more information clarified with regulators,” said Audi of America spokesman Brad Stertz in a phone conversation.

Affected vehicles include certified pre-owned versions of the 2013-’14 Volkswagen Touareg Diesel and new and certified pre-owned 2015-’16 Touareg Diesel SUVs.

The affected Audi vehicles include all 2013-’16 vehicles equipped with the Gen II 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine.

They are the certified pre-owned 2013 Audi Q7; certified pre-owned 2014 A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7; new and certified pre-owned 2015 A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7; and the 2016 A6, A7, A8 and Q5.

The next-generation Q7 will be a 2017 model and the TDI version of that won’t be in the market until late next year, Stertz said. The new Q7 is not included among the stop-sale vehicles.

“This is a proactive measure on our part,” said Volkswagen spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan. “There is no recall and no action for owners to take.”

Porsche Cars North America on Tuesday said it will stop sales of the 2014-’16 Porsche Cayenne Diesel SUV until further notice, following an EPA announcement that some VW, Porsche and Audi models with 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engines are equipped with defeat devices to skirt U.S. clean-air standards.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers should be aware that gasoline versions of the aforementioned vehicles are still for sale at Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen dealerships.
