LOS ANGELES – Subaru today revealed its Impreza sedan concept at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. The concept is a thinly veiled look at the fifth-generation Impreza, which is due in production form next fall as a 2017 model. Short of the car’s basic dimensions and the fact that it will be all-wheel drive, few details are available.
The Impreza Sedan Concept, like the current Impreza sedan, remains smaller in most dimensions than its primary competitors. It’s also lower and wider than the current car. The sedan’s wheelbase, at 105.1 inches, is 1.0 inch longer than the current Impreza, but still notably shorter than the volume-leading Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, both of which have a 106.3-inch wheelbase. At 70.0 inches wide, it’s also narrower than the current Civic, Corolla and Mazda 3.
“The Impreza Sedan Concept is the first car to debut the new design language that will be used on Subaru products going forward,” a Subaru representative told Edmunds.
Indeed, the concept is shapely, and far more aggressive in its shape than the current Impreza. The doors are heavily sculpted, as are the front and rear fenders, which still cleanly integrate with the headlights and taillights. It’s an even more aggressive design than the five-door concept shown at the 2015 Tokyo Auto Show earlier this year.
This car will also be the first to use Subaru’s new modular chassis system, which enables models with different widths and wheelbases to utilize the same suspension design and components.
It’s too early to say what this new design language and chassis will mean for the WRX and WRX STI, which will follow the Impreza in 2019.
