SEOUL, South Korea – Luxury shoppers got their first taste of what Hyundai has in store with its new Genesis brand as the Korean automaker revealed a teaser image of the Genesis G90 flagship sedan.
The current Hyundai Genesis sedan will be renamed the G80, while the Hyundai Equus sedan will be replaced by the G90.
“As the Genesis brand’s flagship model, the G90 is a blueprint for change and innovation that will distinguish the Genesis brand,” Hyundai said in a statement on Tuesday.
The style of the G90 is dubbed “athletic elegance.”
Compared to the 2016 Equus, the G90 features a sleeker look with more dramatic headlights, a large grille and narrower side windows. The 2016 Equus is on sale now at Hyundai dealerships.
Pricing, U.S. launch timing and technical specifications for the G90 were not released, but Hyundai said car shoppers can expect a Genesis flagship packed with technological innovations, “world-best safety features” and “engaging driving dynamics.”
The G90 takes aim at the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The design theme of the G90 will carry over into other new Genesis models. A total of six Genesis models will debut by 2020.
The Genesis renaming strategy will go into effect for the 2017 model year.
