2017 Jaguar XE Revealed for U. S. Market at 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show

LOS ANGELES – We’ve seen it before and driven the European version, but the U.S. version of the 2017 Jaguar XE sport sedan and its accompanying details have finally been revealed at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Set to arrive in U.S. Jaguar showrooms next spring, the aluminum-intensive XE will be available as three models that correspond to different engines: 20d, 25t and 35t. These will further be selectively broken down into the sub-trims base, Premium, Prestige and R-Sport. All will come standard with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 20d and 35t will be available with all-wheel drive.

The 25t represents the base model in terms of price, starting at $35,895. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 240 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque, figures consistent with key competitors that include the Audi A4, BMW 328i, Lexus IS 200t and Mercedes-Benz C300. Jaguar estimates it will go from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, which would be an average time for the segment.

The 20d features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel producing 180 hp, and more importantly, 318 lb-ft of torque. It joins the BMW 328d as the only diesel-powered model in the segment and starts at $37,395. Jaguar was mum on exact fuel economy details, but estimates that it will be “north of 40 mpg on the highway.” For comparison sake, the BMW achieves 42 mpg on the highway.

The XE 35t starts at $42,695 and boasts a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 good for 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, figures well above most competitors. Its estimated 0-60 time of 5.1 seconds seems in keeping with that output.

XE 20d and 35t models equipped with all-wheel drive get the same system found in other new Jaguar models that operates in rear-wheel drive to maximize handling potential and fuel economy. Torque is transferred to the front wheels as needed based on available traction – or lack thereof. The driver can lock in additional front torque distribution by way of a Winter mode.

The R-Sport trim, also only available on the 20d and 35t, comes loaded with all the comfort, luxury and high-tech safety equipment found on the Prestige trim, but adds unique styling elements, special wheels, sport seats, sport gauges, and importantly, a sport-tuned suspension. Adaptive suspension dampers will be an option.

Moving inside, the 2017 XE will offer a choice of two touchscreen infotainment systems. The standard Jaguar InControl Touch consists of an 8-inch capacitive screen that responds to pinching and swiping commands as on a smartphone. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and USB ports are included.

The upgrade InControl Touch Pro features a larger, 10.2-inch capacitive touchscreen along with a more powerful processor and solid-state drive for quicker response times. Its home screen can be customized, and additional functions (“widgets”) can be added. WiFi connection is included with this system.

Also available with either system are Jaguar InControl Apps, which, among other elements, allows owners to deactivate an alarm, lock or unlock doors and activate the HVAC system through their Android or Apple device. There is also an Apple Watch app.

As has become expected, the XE will be available with a variety of advanced driver assistance and accident avoidance technologies. These include an automatic emergency braking system, lane departure warning and lane-keeping systems, a driver inattention warning system, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control, a head-up display and an automatic perpendicular parking system are also available.

Finally, another key piece of information for the 2017 Jaguar XE is the standard Jaguar EliteCare package first available on 2016 model year Jags. It includes a five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty with complementary scheduled maintenance – coverage that bests other luxury brands.

Edmunds says: Jaguar finally attacks the highly competitive and popular entry-level luxury segment with a sedan that on paper seems very capable of giving the big boys a run for their money.
