LOS ANGELES – Infiniti officially revealed the production version of its new 2016 QX30 premium crossover at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The QX30 Concept debuted earlier this year at the 2015 Geneva Auto Show looking very much production-ready, and sure enough, the production version shown here hasn’t changed much.
There are larger mirrors, revised exhaust outlets, clear taillamp lenses and wheels that are ready for actual city streets.
Beyond those obvious concept-to-production concessions, the 2016 QX30 retains all of the visual drama of the concept including the double-wave hood, highly intricate side sculpting and the now-signature Infiniti-kink on the C-pillar.
The Infiniti QX30 is based on a platform shared with the Mercedes-Benz GLA, and it will compete with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3 when it goes on sale in the middle of 2016.
The QX30 is equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive. To allow customers to use that AWD more often, the QX30 is raised an inch higher than the Q30. The QX30 is powered by a Mercedes-designed, Infiniti-built 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
On the inside, Infiniti is promising a minor revolution in the world of luxury cars. Said Executive Design Director Alfonso Albaisa in a statement, “QX30’s asymmetric interior design results in an environment focused on the driver, yet encompassing passengers in such a way as to involve and cater for them, more so than the traditionally isolating designs found in the premium segment.”
Now that we’ve seen it, we’re unsure that they’ve truly separated themselves. Surely the hand-sewn leather is nice, but a good deal of the buttonry is Mercedes-sourced and while clean, the design is a little underwhelming. For something with such an aggressively unique exterior, this feels restrained and basic.
The base QX30 is equipped with cloth seats, while Napa leather in black or beige is optional.
Other interior features include Infiniti’s around-view monitor, intelligent parking assist, adaptive cruise control and an infotainment system with new swipe control.
Edmunds says: This is a growing segment with discerning buyers who value style and performance as much as practicality and efficiency. The QX30 looks like it has the bases covered without simply looking like a rebadged Mercedes GLA.
