WASHINGTON – Fiat-Chrysler US is recalling 65,760 2015-’16 Ram 1500 pickup trucks because they may have been built with rear axles that were incorrectly heat-treated, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“If the rear axle shaft was not properly heat-treated, it may fracture and a wheel separation could occur, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said in its recall summary.
The problem may contribute to increased wear and overheating sufficient to illuminate the vehicle’s antilock brake system warning light, Fiat-Chrysler said.
The company said most of the trucks are in dealer hands. Fiat-Chrysler is aware of a single potentially related accident, but no injuries, it said in a statement.
Affected Ram 1500 trucks were built from June 17, 2015 to September 28, 2015.
The problem was discovered through an internal investigation.
Ram dealers will inspect the trucks and replace the axle assemblies as necessary. A date has not been set for the recall. Owners can contact Fiat-Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
Edmunds says: Customers who observe an antilock brake system warning light or any other concern should contact their dealers now. Others should wait for their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment.
