DETROIT – The Honda Civic topped the Chevrolet Malibu and Mazda MX-5 Miata to win the coveted 2016 North American Car of the Year prize at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. The Volvo XC90 beat the Honda Pilot and Nissan Titan XD for truck of the year honors.
The 2016 Honda Civic is on sale now at Honda dealerships, while the 2016 Volvo XC90 is on sale at Volvo dealerships.
Both vehicles won NACTOY honors in the past. The Civic won the best car award in 2006, while the XC90 won Truck of the Year in 2003.
Key Civic rivals include the Dodge Dart, Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla. The XC90 targets the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Buick Enclave.
The NACTOY awards are given each year by a group of automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada.
The awards honor the most outstanding car and truck/SUV based on factors including innovation, design, safety, performance, handling, driver satisfaction and value.
Last year’s winners were the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford F-150.
Edmunds says: Car shoppers should take note of these awards, since they provide invaluable information about the top vehicles of the year.
