2017 Volvo S90 Is a Swedish Flagship: 2016 Detroit Auto Show
|
DETROIT – The Volvo S90 – a range-topping, technology-heavy luxury sedan – debuted at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.
Touted as Volvo’s most advanced production car ever, the S90 brings Scandinavian style and advanced technology features to the midlevel luxury sedan class.
The S90 is built on the same underpinnings as the XC90 SUV and will share many of the same features and options.
At the top end, it will offer the same T8 plug-in hybrid drivetrain offered in the XC90. In the S90 it will combine two different electric motors with a turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder gas engine to deliver a combined 410 horsepower.
No other details on the S90’s other potential engine choices were released.
Standard equipment includes the company’s next generation of Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving mode that is functional at speeds up to 80 mph. This system allows the car to accelerate, decelerate, come to a complete stop and steer at speeds of up to 80 mph without the need for a pilot or “lead” car in front of it.
All S90s will also be available with an updated crash-avoidance system that can detect large animals such as deer.
Edmunds says: If the autonomous future looks this good, we welcome it. Distinct style inside and out makes the S90 a promising competitor to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class.
