DETROIT – The original Ridgeline pickup truck broke from tradition, and the all-new 2017 Honda Ridgeline that bowed at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show is set to do the same when it hits dealers later this year.
Based on Honda’s global truck platform shared with the Pilot and Acura MDX SUVs, all Ridgelines will have a four-door, five-passenger configuration and come equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission.
Unlike other midsize pickup trucks, the Ridgeline is built on a unibody platform. Unibody construction pays dividends when it comes to cabin noise levels, ride quality and handling.
According to Honda, the Ridgeline has plenty of capability as well. It has an estimated 1,600-pound payload capacity (Honda is still in the process of finalizing this figure) and will be available in front-wheel- and all-wheel-drive configurations.
Its bed is 64 inches long and 60 inches wide, with a completely flat section that’s 48 inches wide. There is also a lockable storage compartment under the bed floor as standard equipment. As on the original Ridgeline, the tailgate can swing open like a door or pivot downward like a traditional tailgate.
The cabin is said to be the largest in the segment and boasts an 8-inch touchscreen, three-zone climate control and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. Its 540-watt audio system extends to the bed, the walls of which contain audio exciters (small devices that vibrate the surface to which they’re mounted to generate sound, rather than traditional speakers) to provide outdoor audio. There’s also an in-bed 400-watt power inverter.
Edmunds says: With strong sales of both the Chevrolet Colorado and Toyota Tacoma, Honda picked a good time to revive its once popular Ridgeline pickup.
