DEARBORN, Michigan – The new 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum edition is scheduled to begin arriving at Ford dealerships this month, with a slight increase over the price that was announced earlier.
Initially, Ford said the 2016 Explorer Platinum was to be priced at $53,495, including an $895 destination fee. But a Ford spokesman told Edmunds that the “price has moved this year, reflecting demand,” and the new price will be $53,795, including a higher destination charge of $945.
The Ford spokesman noted that the base price for the 2016 Explorer has gone up as well. Initially priced at $31,595, including an $895 destination fee, the base model now starts at $31,995, including a $945 destination charge.
The exterior of the Platinum edition is distinguished by unique lighting around the LED headlamps, premium silver front and rear skid plates, signature 20-inch wheels and a standard dual-panel moonroof.
But it’s in the cabin where the Platinum Explorer really stands out.
“Platinum is the ultimate expression of refinement,” said Mike Arbaugh, Ford Explorer chief designer, in a statement. “This is the most upscale, high-quality interior we’ve ever offered on a Ford vehicle in North America.”
Luxury touches include aluminum and ash wood trim, Nirvana leather on the multi-adjustable front seats, instrument panel, armrests and door panels, as well as a wood and leather-wrapped heated steering wheel and exclusive stitching throughout the interior.
The cabin features a 10-inch digital dashboard display and a 500-watt Sony sound system.
Standard technology includes active park assist, a lane-keeping system and rain-sensing wipers.
Power is provided by a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine rated at 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque that comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2016 For Explorer Platinum edition targets such premium competitors as the BMW X5, Buick Enclave Premium, Land Rover LR4, Lexus RX 350 F Sport and the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit.
Edmunds says: With the arrival of the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum edition, shoppers in the market for a premium-grade SUV now have one more compelling model to consider.
