2009-'12 Toyota RAV4 Recalled for Windshield Wiper Problem

TORRANCE, California – Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. is recalling approximately 421,000 2009-’12 Toyota RAV4 SUVs because the windshield wipers could become inoperative, the automaker said on Thursday.

The recall also includes approximately 2,500 2012-’14 Toyota RAV4 EVs.

“Water dripping onto the windshield wiper link can, over time, cause corrosion and wear at the wiper link joint,” Toyota said in a statement. “In some cases, this could result in the separation of the wiper link from the wiper motor crank arm.

“If separation occurs, the windshield wipers could become inoperative, which could reduce driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.”

Toyota did not respond immediately to a query from Edmunds asking if there are any injuries, crashes or fatalities linked to the recall.

Toyota dealers will replace the water channel, wiper link and wiper motor crank arm with new ones. A date has not been specified for the recall. Owners can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

No information about the recall has been posted on the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle safety in the U.S.

Edmunds says: Owners of these vehicles should expect to receive a formal recall notice within 60 days. Those with an immediate concern should contact their dealer now.
